Editorial Retouching

In 2014, I was offered a job as an editorial retoucher for Zulily. Even though this was a departure from Graphic Design, I knew this was an important opportunity to learn a new skill set that would further my career. I was in charge of retouching every main homepage image of that day’s deal.

Zulily has its own photo studio with photographers and stylists. It was really cool to see the in and outs of how studios are run and to be able to collaborate on the final product. I absolutely model the shoots I direct today after what I learned in that environment.

Retouching Before and Afters

My favorite thing was creating editorial composites - when you take product and stock background images and merge them together, as if it were photographed that way. This involves creating lighting and shadows that help make the image look real.

Fun Fact: The photo studio needed to photograph a family, but couldn't coordinate all family members at the same time. I was asked to take the photos they took of the parents and the image of the kid and merge them as if the kid was with them the whole time! (see above image)
